The two girls were usually known by their surnames, Banford and March. They had taken the farm together, intending to work it all by themselves that is, they were going to rear chickens, make a living by poultry, and add to this by keeping a cow, and raising one or two young beasts. Unfortunately, things did not turn out well. Banford was a small, thin, delicate thing with spectacles. She, however, was the principal investor, for March had little or no money. Banford’s father, who was a tradesman in Islington, gave his daughter the start, for her health’s sake, and because he loved her, and because it did not look as if she would marry.

I first read it in college over 50 years ago. The fact that Lawrence wrote it (and his other great novels) in an era of censorship and condemnationcaused him to force the reader to utilize imagination - a tact that modern writers need not master due to the ability to write so sexually explicitly that little imagination is required. Highly erotic as we discover the sexual confusion of Nellie. The movie from 1967 was able to take liberties due to the more relaxed censorship. If they ever make the movie again I'm sure it will result in a menage' which just might have pleased old D.H. anyway. Treat yourself to the type of erotica Lady Mary might have kept hidden under the covers at Downton Abbey.

The Fox David Herbert Lawrence 9781541249523 Books Reviews
Sorry piece of crap and a waste of time. Don't bother. Some college professor might drool over this but most of them are fruity anyhow.
An enjoyable read that filled an evening. The interplay between the characters and the powerful metaphor of the sly fox created an intriguing story.
Terrible formatting. Unreadable. Words are chopped up with often a single letter beginning a new line. This should come with a warning. Even at zero cost it is a waste.
D H Lawrence is always a good read, but this version when set for has spaces at the start of each paragraph so that the first letter of the first word is separated from the rest of the word.
Not what I expected at all, and is just poor quality. Wish I hadn't wasted my time or money. Very disappointing.
Even moreso than in Gutenberg- instances- looks typewriterset and wholly unmarkedup. A few footnotes might have been good. Still, small point. Enjoyable read with quite a few surprises, one way or another.
The story by Lawrence is fantastic. Unfortunately the formatting of the e-book is atrocious. Words frequently cut out at the end of the line creating a distracting reading experience. Also, really has to fix the reviews system. The second reviewer seems to be reviewing a soft cover version of the story, as opposed to critiquing this e-book Australian Gutenberg version. Each edition should get separate reviews. I hope they fix this soon, and separate reviews according to the right products. Otherwise this service is not very helpful.
